Karen L. Edwards, PhD, professor and chair, UC Irvine School of Medicine's Department of Epidemiology

Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology in the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine.

Epidemiology is the study of the frequency, distribution and determinants of disease in human populations.

Our department provides rigorous training in the fundamentals and practice of epidemiology. We currently focus on graduate education and offer MS and PhD degrees in Epidemiology.

Our teaching and research expertise includes diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, aging and cognition, as well as the environmental, social, dietary and genetic determinants of health. Department faculty members address these and other topics in their research and teaching.

UC Irvine prides itself on transdisciplinary research. We work with faculty members in many departments within the School of Medicine, with other units within the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, across the UC Irvine campus, and with institutions outside the university to describe, understand and reduce disease in human populations.

We are a dynamic, young and growing department, and I invite you to join us as we tackle the challenges of improving population health locally, nationally and globally.

Please browse our website for more information about our faculty, academic and research programs, and admissions process.

Warmest regards,

Karen L. Edwards, PhD
Professor and Chair, Department of Epidemiology
