Seminar

Solar Ultraviolet Radiation: Benefits and Harms

Dr. William Grant, Ph.D
Founding Director Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center SUNARC

Date: Thursday, August 04, 2005
Time: 3:00 PM
Location: Sprague Hall Conference Room University of California, Irvine
Note: This lecture is hosted by Dr. Hoda Anton-Culver of the Genetic Epidemiology Research Institute and Dr. Frank Meyskens of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

William B. Grant, SUNARC (www.sunarc.org), San Francisco, will discuss use of the ecologic approach to determine beneficial and harmful links to solar UV irradiance. The benefits include about 16 types of internal cancers, multiple sclerosis, etc. The harms include melanoma and other skin cancer, cataracts, etc. However, it appears that UVA (315-400 nm) rather than UVB (290-315 nm) is the more important spectral region for basal cell carcinoma and melanoma.
