| The Genetic Epidemiology Research Institute and the Ben and Barbara Harris Distinguished Speaker Series Present Dr. Dietrich Stephan
The Neurogenomics Program has only two goals: to improve the ability to diagnose neurological disease before it strikes, a goal based on the knowledge that early intervention and treatment saves lives and to focus on the development of new "smart-drug" therapies for this tragic set of diseases that impact so many lives around the world, whether directly in the form of the disease or indirectly in the care or loss of a friend or relative. The research activities of the Neurobehavioral Research Unit at TGen focus on the identification of the heritable genetic factors underlying devastating disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, bipolar disease, depression, and others. Understanding of this general class of disorders has been hampered historically by a number of barriers, such as the difficulties in understanding the biology and function of the normal human brain, difficulties obtaining consensus diagnoses, and the general unavailability of tissue from the site of pathology. Despite these roadblocks, it is now time to apply the elegant tool sets derived from the Human Genome Project to this large set of devastating disorders. |
