Research Summary

Dr. Taylor is heavily involved with statistical aspects of the two population-based, regional cancer registries housed in the Department of Epidemiology at UCI, namely, The Cancer Surveillance Program of Orange County, and the San Diego / Imperial Organization for Cancer Control, which are two of the ten cancer-reporting regions comprising the California Cancer Registry . Working closely with Professor Hoda Anton-Culver, Chair of Epidemiology, Dr. Taylor is responsible for generating statistics from these registries of use to scientists, clinicians, government, and the lay public. While much of the work is on an ad-hoc basis, an annual report of incidence and morality in Orange County and, separately, the combination of San Diego and Imperial Counties is available. Dr. Taylor is also involved in Phase II trials of chemoprevention / diet and cancer, through the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is a valued member of that institution’s Clinical Trials Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee.

Besides courses in methods and statistics, Dr. Taylor has taught courses in the history and philosophy of science, and is interested in the design, analysis, and interpretation of studies and experiments. Statistically, he is very interested in Monte-Carlo methods, which he has used to screen geographic data for possible cancer clusters and to evaluate the statistical implications of changes in cancer-registry methods (e.g., Publication No. 1). Biologically, he is very interested in how risks for specific cancer types change in the face of a cancer diagnosis (e.g., Publication No. 2). He also has an interest in quality-of-life issues for cancer patients, and their family and friends (e.g., Publication No. 3).
