About Epidemiology @ UCI

Epidemiology as a discipline is concerned with the distribution, causation and control of disease across time and space in human populations. The mission of the Department of Epidemiology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine is to study the etiology (genetic and environmental) and control of chronic disease, particularly cancer, through its surveillance, education, research and service activities. Faculty research interests include genetics and molecular epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, statistical genetics, environmental epidemiology, reproductive epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, infectious diseases, and occupational epidemiology. The UCI Center for Cancer Genetics Research and Prevention operates within the Department of Epidemiology.

Our Mission

  • expand and integrate basic, clinical and epidemiologic research to identify and characterize genes responsible for inherited predisposition to cancer.
  • provide the infrastructure to establish effective interventions in individuals with inherited predispositions to cancer.
  • establish approaches to study the interactions between genes and individual genetic variations and the environment to understand cancer risk.
  • develop the informatics needed to collect, store, analyze, and integrate the resulting molecular, epidemiologic and clinical data.
  • identify the causes of diseases in relation to environmental exposures, life style conditions, and genetic factors.
  • improve the level of education of medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows in the application of epidemiologic principles to their research.
  • promote the application of epidemiologic methods in clinical medicine, prevention and control of diseases.
  • evaluation of community needs to assist in health planning.
  • monitor incidence of disease in the population to provide information in making decisions concerning public health.
